Occupational Asthma: Is Your Job Making You Sick?

Did you know, workers can develop asthma if they are exposed to certain chemicals and substances at work? Work-related asthma, or occupational asthma, is more common than you think, it makes up an estimated 15 percent of the U.S. asthma cases.

Occupational asthma is caused or made worse by exposure to chemicals, irritants or allergens in the workplace. Symptoms may emerge immediately after exposure or develop over a period of time (days, months, years).

Common symptoms are:
• Wheezing
• Coughing
• Shortness of breath
• Chest tightness

Occupational asthma is a costly lung disease that affects roughly 11 million people in a wide range of industries and occupations. It can cause some workers to become too disabled to work or be forced to change jobs. The best way to control occupational asthma is to diagnose and treat it early.

OHC believes prevention is better than the cure. If you think you may have symptoms of occupational asthma, consult your occupational health provider.
