5 Ways to Prevent Heat Illness

All workers are at risk for heat illness during the summer months, especially during a heat wave. In 2014, 2,630 workers suffered from heat illness and 18 died from a heat stroke. If you work in hot or humid conditions, it’s important to know how to handle heat safely. Below are five tips to keep you safe and limit your risk of heat illness:
OHSA recommends drinking water every 15 minutes, even if you’re not thirsty. Why? When your body recognizes it’s thirsty, it could mean you are dehydrated.
Take breaks often. Rest under a shaded area to cool yourself down.
Wearing the right clothing can help keep you cool. Select clothes that are lightweight, loose fitting and light colored. Also, wear a hat and sunglasses if possible.
Recognize signs & symptoms
Educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as a heat stroke, heat stress, and heat exhaustion.
If you’re not used to working in hot and humid conditions, take enough time to let your body acclimate. Slowly increase the amount of time and work done in the heat so your body can adjust.
